Start here

If you are not sure where to begin, begin here. There is no need to read every guide on this site or change every setting in one sitting. Work through the four stages below in order, spend a few minutes on whichever ones apply to you, and stop whenever you feel done for today.

1. Pick your device

Your device's operating system holds some of the broadest privacy controls you have, including advertising identifiers and app permissions that affect everything installed on it. Start with whichever one you carry or sit in front of most.

2. Then your browser

Most of your day-to-day tracking happens through the web, so your browser's cookie and tracking-protection settings matter almost as much as your device's. Pick the one you actually use, not necessarily the one that came preinstalled.

3. Then the big accounts

A single account, like Google or Apple, often ties together your email, cloud storage, ad preferences, and activity history across many apps at once. Adjusting one setting here can affect more than adjusting several app-level settings individually.

4. Then the apps you actually use

Once your device, browser, and main accounts are set, work through the individual apps that matter to you: the messaging app you rely on daily, the social app you post to, the AI assistant you talk to. Skip anything you have never installed.
